G-Works's current situation and goals
The collaboration between G-Works and HJK began in the spring of 2022, when we launched a refactoring project for HJK’s website at the time. As part of the project, we overhauled the WordPress-based site: we removed unnecessary plugins, streamlined the overall structure, and improved security. At the same time, the site was transferred to G-Works for maintenance.
Despite active maintenance and continuous development, by the fall of 2025 it was clear that the site was nearing the end of its lifecycle. The challenges were related to both technology and the user interface—the site no longer met HJK’s goals or its growing digital role.
The goal of the redesign was to build a modern, scalable, and intuitive website that would simultaneously serve fans, partners, and new customers.
A clear structure for the entire club community
At the heart of the new website, a single, unified hjk.fi homepage was created to serve as a gateway to all of HJK’s activities. From the homepage, visitors are seamlessly directed to the men’s and women’s sections, as well as to the juniors’ own website.
Key elements of the structure included:
- taking different target groups into account
- clarifying HJK’s operations and services
- highlighting commercial content and services more prominently than before
The end result is a comprehensive platform where the club’s wide-ranging activities are easy to understand and navigate.
Focus on the match experience and content
At the heart of HJK’s operations are the matches and related content. The new website places particular emphasis on developing the match pages and presenting match reports and previews in a clear manner. The new website offers a wide range of data for matches, which is updated in real time on the match page as the game progresses.
In addition, the news section has been completely revamped:
- clearer news categories
- team-specific content presentation
- improved discoverability and navigability
These solutions support HJK’s active communication efforts and ensure that fans can quickly find the latest content.
Integrations bring data to life
The website was integrated with statistical data provided by the Finnish Football Association, which automatically updates match, team, and player information on the site.
This enables:
- up-to-date match information
- real-time match information for games in progress
- comprehensive statistics on both matches and players
- consistent and reliable data presentation for all teams
Preserving a rich history of content
Over the years, a significant amount of content had accumulated on the HJK website. As part of the project, approximately 7,000 news articles were migrated from the old site to the new one.
The migration ensured:
- the preservation and usability of the content
- compatibility with the new structure
- maintained search engine visibility
In this way, HJK’s digital history was seamlessly integrated into the new platform.
Modern technology as a driver of growth
HJK’s new website was built using a modern architecture in which WordPress serves as the content management system and the user interface is separated into its own module.
The benefits of this so-called “headless” model include, among others:
- Extremely fast loading times – Thanks to static pages, the website can be served via a content delivery network (CDN), ensuring smooth operation and fast loading even with high visitor traffic.
- High security and reliability – Thanks to the distributed architecture, the user interface is not dependent on the operation of the content management system, which improves the service’s reliability and reduces the impact of individual disruptions on the site’s usability.
- Flexible further development – Individual user interface changes can be tested in parallel in their own preview environments using production data. This enables significantly more agile, secure, and efficient further development.
- Extensive integration capabilities – New services can be easily integrated into the overall system
The solution creates a strong foundation for HJK’s future digital development projects—ranging from new services to potential app and stadium integrations.
Faster, more spectacular, and ready for the new season
The new website was successfully launched on schedule before the start of the new Veikkausliiga season. The end result is a modern, fast, and scalable platform that can be cost-effectively developed further in line with the club’s needs and strategies.
The project proceeded in close collaboration between HJK and G-Works, and the joint effort was efficient and solution-oriented from start to finish.
